4 · Quests — Schritt fuer Schritt entdecken

As of September 2026 · Midnight Quests

An offline companion on foot and by bike. What the app is, what it rests on, and where it is going — in eleven sections.

1 · What it is

Midnight Quests is an offline companion for going out on foot and by bike. The whole map of a country lives on the phone, so the map, the fog you uncover, your kilometres, the quests and the quiz all work with zero connection — in a forest, in a valley, or abroad on roaming. You need an account only for the parts where other people are.

2 · The offline map

A country is downloaded once and then belongs to the device — no roaming, no dead spot, no data plan while you are out. It is a real map, cut to the country's own outline: roads, water, terrain and the names of places, all rendered on the phone. There is no tile server following you around, because there is no server to follow you at all.

3 · Fog of war — uncover on foot

The map begins under a dark blanket, and you lift it by walking. A circle clears around wherever you have actually been; the rest stays covered until you go there. What you have uncovered is yours, saved as an area per region so a new phone does not start from nothing — the area, never the route, so no path and no time of day can be read out of it.

4 · Quests — discover step by step

A quest is a reason to go somewhere: a chain of stops that ends at a place worth reaching. They are built from the country's own landmarks, so they exist everywhere the map does, offline. Standing at a place is how you complete it — not driving past — and the arrival is checked on the device, within a few metres.

5 · Points along the way

With the country come the points that matter on foot: rest stops, springs and fountains, shelters and huts, barbecue places, viewpoints, peaks, caves, waterfalls, toilets and campsites — hundreds of thousands of them, nine bytes each, all offline. Drinkable and untested water are kept deliberately apart: a shared blue would send you to a pond when you are thirsty.

6 · Paths, not roads

This is a map for feet and wheels. Paths, tracks, footways and cycleways each carry their own colour, because a hiking path and a cycleway and a farm track are three different things to someone travelling under their own power. Motorways are drawn darkest, so the map answers the question you actually have: where can I go, not where can a car go.

7 · The neighbourhood — meet before you message

The social side rests on one rule: you write only with people you have actually met. A friendship is made in person, by showing a code that a photo cannot fake. Messages between people who have met are encrypted end to end — the server carries them but cannot read them. And there is a local channel: a room made from where you stand, for the people around you.

8 · Clubs, jobs and the market

Clubs are groups to belong to; a workshop is a place to book a slot with; the market is where gear changes hands. Crew jobs are decided by a vote, and who may vote is fixed in advance: members of the clubs whose home lies in the job's area. The vote goes one way, the electorate is frozen, and the credential to prove it is single-use.

9 · Knowledge

A daily quiz — hundreds of questions in both languages, offline — and the landmarks of the country to visit and collect. Both are there to give a walk a shape beyond the distance: a reason to turn left, a thing to stand in front of, a small piece of the place you did not know before.

10 · Privacy & technology

Everything essential happens on the device. No advertising, no analytics, no tracking. Your location is processed on the phone to uncover the map, count kilometres and check arrivals — we do not see where you are. Sharing your location with others is explicitly opt-in. A deleted account takes its data with it, messages and saved area included. The full text is in the privacy policy.

11 · Where it is going

Midnight Quests and Midnight Compass are one account and one world seen two ways — the driver's and the walker's. The map grows country by country; the neighbourhood grows person by person. The direction is always the same: as much as possible on the device, as little as possible on a server, and nothing about you that you did not choose to share.
