What's in the App

Built for driving — everything works offline, on the road.

A road discovered while driving

Tracks find you while you drive

Come within range of an unknown course and it surfaces on the map — with the moon phase, the road numbers and your speed all in view. You get five minutes to take it.

Road detail with distance, standard time and points

Then you drive it

Distance, the time to beat, the points on offer and how technical it is — then navigate to the start line and go.

Live speedometer

Live speed & 0–100 benchmarks

A real-time speedometer with today / month / all-time records, plus a timed 0–100 km/h benchmark that tracks your personal best.

Offline map with quest and road markers

A map that never loads while you drive

A whole country is stored on your phone as a vector map — roads, buildings and town labels render instantly, with zero connection needed.

Fog-of-war exploration

Explore & reveal the map

Drive to uncover the world — a fog-of-war layer clears as you go, tracking how much of every region you've explored, day or night.

The map filter menu

Decide what the map shows you

Tap your own marker and the map's layers fan out as three groups — Unity, Essentials, Roads — each opening its own filters. The menu learns what you actually use and puts it first.

Saved places and workshops in the map filter

Your places, one tap away

Home, work, the workshop, anywhere else — save them once and the filter lists them by name. Pick one and either navigate straight there or just put it on screen. Workshops taking bookings sit in the same menu.

A vehicle trading card

Every car gets a card

Your own photo across the top, an OVR class worked out from power-to-weight, your top speed, the kilometres that car has actually covered, and your duel record.

The driver card

And so does the driver

The card other drivers see: your level, how much of the quest board and of your country you have covered, your best vehicle class — and your best car with its marque's flag. Everything on it is earned by driving; there is nothing to buy or type in.

The Midnight Shop wallet

Kilometres become credits

Ten credits for every kilometre you drive, booked once a week — never mid-drive. Spend them in the Midnight Shop on navigation, radar, radio and car graphics, and the wallet keeps the whole history of what came in and what went out.

Quest categories

Quests — six ways to discover a country

Switch between Explore hunts, Compass grand tours, Car History, Culture and Biography with the pills atop the Quests menu — each a different flavour of discovery, each worth points.

Car History quests

Real places, real stories

Thousands of German origins — car makers & inventions, composers & artists, motorsport legends. Drive once to a place of origin to unlock it, then replay its short illustrated quiz from anywhere.

Compass grand tours

Compass — the grand tours

The top tier: rare multi-origin journeys that chain several places into one epic route — like a tour through the birthplaces of the German car industry — worth 99 points each.

Quest generator

Generate a quest in seconds

Pick a landmark or origin and a difficulty, and the app auto-builds a full multi-stop quest with facts-based questions from 51,000 bundled German landmarks — preview, tweak and publish.

Quiz playthrough

Answer & learn

Every stop tells its story and asks a question — real facts about the places you discover, from when a cathedral was built to who founded a marque.

Whitepaper

How Midnight Compass works — an offline-first driver's companion for Europe.

1 · What it is

Midnight Compass is an offline-first companion app for drivers. The entire map of your country lives on the phone, so the map, your speed, your routes and the world you explore all work with zero connection — on a mountain pass, in a tunnel or abroad on roaming. Opening the Compass drops you straight onto the map; everything else (speed, drag, drift, quests) is a pill away on top. An optional online layer adds community rankings, events, a marketplace and a deep quest system, but the core experience never needs a signal.

2 · The offline map

A whole country is bundled as a vector map (PMTiles — Germany ~3.4 GB, Britain ~1.5 GB, Ireland with Northern Ireland ~0.3 GB, Austria with Switzerland ~1.9 GB, the Netherlands with Belgium ~1.1 GB) and rendered on-device with MapLibre GL — roads, water, buildings and town labels draw instantly in a custom day/night style with a 3D driving tilt. Points of interest (fuel, car-wash, food), ~23,000 mobile-camera hotspots and ~7,000 fixed speed cameras are packed in too, so navigation and warnings work fully offline.

3 · Fog of war — explore & reveal

The map starts hidden under a fog layer that clears as you drive. Every revealed cell is permanent and counts toward an exploration score for each Bundesland and Kreis — a game-like reason to take the road less travelled. A background mode keeps revealing the map and logging kilometres with the screen off, and crews can pool their explored territory into a shared, colour-coded map.

4 · Quests — discover the country

Midnight Compass turns the country you are in into a board of quests, sorted into categories you switch between with the pills atop the Quests menu. Explore holds admin-built treasure hunts: travel to each hidden "?" one stop at a time, answering a question to unlock the next, until the final location is permanently revealed as its reward marker. Car History, Culture and Biography are thousands of real German origins — car makers and inventions, composers and artists, motorsport legends. Drive once to a place of origin to unlock it, then replay its short illustrated quiz from anywhere. Compass holds rare grand tours that chain several origins into one epic journey, and Roads unlock a road you can drive again when you finish them. Anything that isn't location-locked works the same way: a "?" appears on the map, you drive within range to locate it, and from then on you can play it wherever you are. Completions earn points by tier — Compass 99, Car History 50, Roads 35, side quests 25 — tallied in Unity and in Settings → Quest Completion.

5 · Building & sharing quests

Admins build quests by hand in the Builder: set a start, add stops with text, images, videos and a multiple-choice question, mark the final destination's reward marker, then upload to publish for everyone. A Quest Generator can auto-build a whole multi-stop tour from any of 51,000 bundled German landmarks — pick a destination and a difficulty and it lays out a route with facts-based questions to preview, tweak and publish. Finishing a quest can trigger a cinematic Completion Experience: an optional intro video under a "Quest Completed!" overlay before the destination is revealed. And once you've located a quest yourself you can share it by QR — a friend who scans it sees the origin revealed on their map, but still has to drive there to unlock it.

6 · Speed & performance

A GPS speedometer records today / month / all-time bests, a timed 0–100 km/h benchmark tracks your personal best, and dedicated Drag, Drift and Sprint modes measure acceleration, cornering and point-to-point runs. Vehicles are ranked into S–F performance classes from power-to-weight and recorded times.

7 · Roads

The community shares roads worth driving — simple A→B stretches, multi-waypoint routes or free-ride recordings. GPS starts the clock at the beginning and stops it at the end, and the time you are measured against is your own previous one; the board beside it only shows how other drivers got on over the same road, at whatever moment suited them. Nobody drives against anybody in real time, there is no start signal and no opponent — a road can only be started from within range of its marker, and every one of them is a public road with the usual limits on it.

8 · Community

Online extras layer on top: a live event calendar with QR-unlocked meets, a parts marketplace, a vehicle knowledge base, crews with shared territory, and friends with opt-in live location sharing. New accounts are reviewed and approved by an admin before they unlock.

9 · Privacy & technology

Built in Flutter for iOS and Android on top of MapLibre GL and geolocator, backed by a PHP/MySQL service on mi-su.me. Everything that can run offline does; your explored map and stats live on the device, location sharing is strictly opt-in, and background tracking runs behind a visible Android foreground-service notification — never silently.

10 · Offline & online mode

Midnight Compass is offline-first: the whole map, fog-of-war exploration, quests, the Car & Moto Dex, the quiz, your kilometres and speed records all work with no signal — everything that realistically can run on the device, does. Features that inherently need the network are the online mode: sharing crew points, direct messages, the marketplace and admin account approval. In particular, crew points can only be shared with an internet connection; offline you keep playing and everything syncs the next time you are online — the online mode never blocks the offline experience.

11 · Three currencies and the moon calendar

Driving pays. Midnight Credits are earned purely by distance — 10 credits per kilometre — and spent in the Midnight Shop on four upgrades (navigation, radar, radio, car graphic) with five levels each, gated at account levels 20/40/60/80/100. Experience comes from quests and the daily quiz and drives that account level. Research points are the Lab's own currency. What makes the economy legible is that nothing pays out on a rolling clock: every booking lands on a principal moon phase — new moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter — so there are two paydays a fortnight, on the same days for everyone, computed on the device and identically on the server. A daily check-in adds a small bonus per day and a further +3 % for a clean week.

12 · The Research Lab — parts the crowd commissions

Some parts do not exist any more, and no manufacturer will tool up for forty cars. The Lab is where a crowd commissions them anyway: a development lists its engineering cost, any approval fees and the material cost per unit, and splits the shared part across the number of backers it needs. Backing reserves your points rather than spending them — they stay blocked, and you can leave until the work is finished. When the last backer joins, the goal flips to funded on its own and the development closes to new backers; when it is delivered, the reserved points are finally charged and every backer's stake is recorded as fulfilled. The Depot alongside it turns the same points into fuel cards and workshop goods, where only the shipping workshop ever sees a delivery address.

13 · Territory, seasons and the 5 km grid

Every country pack is cut into 5 km cells named like a chessboard — A1 in the south-west corner through DZ176 in the far north-east, 130 columns by 176 rows. It is pure arithmetic on a fixed anchor, so the phone and the server always agree on which cell a point falls in, and two drivers can talk about "K42" without swapping coordinates. Crews hold territory in those cells. A seasonal run is the sharpest way to take one: it counts only during its own season, the fog covers everything on the day so prior exploration does not help, and going over 100 km/h voids the attempt — route knowledge decides it, not speed. A co-pilot states all of that before the clock starts, and a win takes 100 km of territory for your crew, held until the season ends.

14 · The region radio

Every district can have one station, hand-authored and played from the device as you drive through. Crossing a border never cuts a track off: the new region is remembered and takes over the moment the current segment ends — and if you turn back before it does, nothing changes at all. Stations carry music, callers, stories and news. A caller can leave a tip, and when that call ends you are offered a quest built on the spot from the bundled landmark pack around wherever you happen to be — a different place for every driver, and no connection needed for any of it.

15 · Support — MISUNAI answers

Under Settings → App → About → Support you can ask MISUNAI, Midnight Sun’s self-trained AI, anything about the app. It answers one question at a time from a private PC, not from a cloud, using only what the app’s whitepaper and menus describe — it knows nothing else about you and can be wrong. The page says openly whether MISUNAI is online, offline (the PC is off and the question waits) or “Support busy – learning” while it is being trained. Asking needs a signed-in account; questions are kept for 90 days and deleted with the account.

What MiSu Coins are for

One currency, four apps. It comes out of the membership and buys things money alone cannot.

Parts nobody makes any moreIn the Research Lab the community commissions a part together. Your Coins reserve your share — they are only spent once it is actually delivered.
Goods from the DepotWorkshop goods and fuel vouchers, listed by real businesses. The delivery address is seen by exactly one person: the seller of that one order.
A crew of your ownFounding a crew costs Coins, and crew jobs are paid in them. Join a built-in crew instead and you pay in Midnight Credits.
Payday is the moonNothing pays out on a running clock. Every credit falls on a principal moon phase — the same day for everyone, computed identically on the device and on the server.
Pay at the table in CoinsIn preparation: the venue shows a QR code, the guest scans it with Compass, and the Coins move from their balance to the house — 130 Coins per euro, the same rate the Depot uses. The owner spends them on, in the Depot and the Lab. Coins stay inside the system: nothing is ever cashed out, to them or to anyone.
A closed loopCoins never leave the system. They are not paid out, not exchanged back and not turned into money — not for guests, not for venues. What goes in stays in and gets spent.

How a payday works

The first euro of the week covers the platform's own costs. Every euro after it becomes 70 MiSu Coins.

Payday is a moon phase — new moon, first quarter, full moon, last quarter. That is every 7.38 days, so four paydays in a lunar month. Check in daily and you earn a little more on top.

What Coins buy

Real parts and real work in the Research Lab, and listings in the Depot — the workshop marketplace inside Midnight Garage.

They also found a crew and pay crew jobs. Coins do not expire, and they are separate from Midnight Credits, which you earn by driving.

Nothing is paid on this page. Support happens on Patreon; the tier is then recorded against your Midnight account and turns into Coins inside the apps. mi-su.me stores no payment method and takes no payment. Tier names and amounts follow what is set up on Patreon — if they differ there, Patreon is the one that counts.
